TIVACI
A quality 3YO, Tivaci would eventually claim his Group 1 before entering Waikato Stud as a successful sire
TIVACI, a retired racehorse, is currently a stallion at Waikato Stud and has demonstrated his success as a sire since joining the roster in 2017. Trained by Mike Moroney at Ballymore Stables in Melbourne, Tivaci concluded his distinguished racing career with a stunning Group 1 victory in Sydney. With 29 starts on Australian turf, he secured six wins across distances ranging from 1000m to 1600m. Tivaci celebrated his first Group 1 winner as a sire when NEVER BEEN KISSED won the Gr.1 ATC Flight Stakes in 2021.
TIVACI was foaled in 2012 and raced from 2015 to 2017. He was sired by HIGH CHAPARRAL out of the FASTNET ROCK mare BRECCIA (Luna Tudor). His dam managed two wins at 2000m trained by the immortal Bart Cummings. His dam also produced winners MERCANTE and BRAZEN BRECCIA. TIVACI was trained by Michael Moroney; bred by J. B. Cummings. An elite three-year-old, he debuted with victory drawing clear in September 2015 at Eucha before a 2nd place at Pakenham.
TIVACI would fight hard for 2nd in the Listed UCI Stakes (1800m) at Flemington, although his next race at Caulfield would be a failure, running last before chasing hard but peaking late for 5th in the Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) returning to Flemington. After a three month break, Tivaci would return in February 2016 with a victory at Pakenham followed by a protest win over PALENTINO in the Gr.3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m). Despite drawing a wide barrier, Tivaci's performance in the G1 Australian Guineas was compromised when the jockey reported the horse took charge and expended excessive energy by moving five wide from the 600m mark, ultimately burning out in the run home.
The next run in the Bendigo Guineas wasn't any easier, settling 12 lengths back and trapped wide trying to make up lost ground with little effect. Mike Moroney would then travel north with Tivaci for the Brisbane Carnival, firstly finishing 4th in the Fred Best Stakes at Doomben and 6th in the Queensland Guineas, but would go on to win the 2016 Sunshine Coast Guineas as a consolation prize ridden by Damien Browne. The race would eventually be renamed after a horse who had won the year previous - a handy type called WINX.
Returning in the spring of 2016 as s more mature four-year-old, TIVACI would really hit his straps by finishing 2nd in the Gr.2 Bobbie Lewis with a sound effort, then ran on ok for 6th in the Gr.1 Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) won by BON AURUM. Another fine effort saw the entire finish 3rd in the Toorak Handicap, and after a three week freshen up, a 3rd place in the Gr.1 Cantala Stakes. Subsequently, the entire encountered an unfavourable position at the tail during the Gr.1 McKinnon Stakes, which significantly hindered his performance. However, following a brief hiatus, Tivaci returned to secure a victory in the Listed Kensington Stakes (1000m) at Flemington, with a payout of $17.00, surpassing more favoured contenders such as HELLBENT and EL DIVINO.
TIVACI was kept fresh for the $1.2 million Gr.1 Newmarket due to be to run down the Flemington straight in March of 2017, athough he would have to settle for 5th place as no one was counting on REDKIRK WARRIOR causing a massive upset, although it was a sound run. Again, Moroney would attempt to keep Tivaci on the fresh side for the Gr.1 T.J Smith Stakes at Randwick where he would finish 4th and clash with the brilliant CHAUTAUQUA who would explode late down the outside and put the result to bed. The connections of TIVACI must have been contemplating the measures required to secure a victory in a feature race.
Ultimately, their perseverance in Sydney proved fruitful, as the High Chaparral progeny delivered his most exceptional and conclusive performance on the track to end his career in winning the Gr.1 All-Aged Stakes (1400m) at Randwick with Damien Oliver in the saddle. His win was incredible at Randwick that day, because you definitely had to be on the speed to win. He was second to last on the turn and showed massive acceleration to pick them up and win easily. Consequently, the stallion was retired to stud after capturing his maiden Group 1 in Australia.
Mark Chittick of Waikato Stud wasn’t expecting Tivaci’s first crop to star as juveniles and always tipped them to impress as three-year-olds, just as the son of High Chaparral did during his racing days with Flemington trainer Michael Moroney. However, they would be astonished by the demand for his progeny as a first-season sire, aligning him with accomplished stallions such as OCEAN PARK and SAVABEEL. While the success of unproven stallions can be unpredictable, there was a widespread belief that TIVACI possessed the inherent qualities necessary to excel in a breeding capacity.
TIVACI's first crop of yearlings sold extremely well, with the Book One Sale in 2020 returning an average of nearly five times his service fee. The top-priced yearling was a filly for $500,000. His second crop in 2021 saw a top sale of NZ$360,000 at Karaka. At the Gold Coast Magic Millions Sale he had a 100% sale rate at an average price of AU$190,000 with his best result coming from a AU$260,000 colt sold to Peter Moody. His third crop in 2022 had the top price of NZ$420,000 at the Karaka Sale. At the Inglis Classic Sale, he averaged AU$265,000 while at Inglis Premier Sale, his top lot sold for AU$320,000. Tivaci sold 33 yearlings during the 2023 sales season, averaging $96,914 with a top price of $350,000 NZD at Karaka.
His progeny started to perform early on and was represented by his first winner when three-year-old CELEVACCI was successful on debut at Belmont in Perth. Tivaci’s son SOUGHT AFTER headed across the Tasman to Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman after performing well in NZ as a 3YO and TUXEDO excelled carrying on from his Gr.2 Waikato Guineas win in 2025 and in March this year claimed the Gr.3 Aotearoa Classic at Ellerslie. AMERICAN WOLF won the Gr.2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) proving the sires versatility and his offspring have also been success in Hong Kong. KING OF THUNDER, OUT OF THE BLUE, WOLFY, SINHAMAN, LIPPY, LOVACI and WOLVERINE as well as many others have stood out on both sides of the Tasman. The Group 1-winning stallion Tivaci stands at Waikato Stud in Matamata, New Zealand. His service fee is set at NZ$8,000 + GST.
