A lightly raced champion three-year-old, Proisir would prove himself in the breeding barn at Rich Hill Stud

PROISIR was a star Australian three-year-old in what proved to be a vintage year and included star gallopers the likes of PIERRO, ALL TOO HARD, DUNDEEL, NORZITA and REBEL DANE. Despite a brief career of only seven starts, as a sire Proisir has achieved remarkable success, dethroning SAVABEEL to claim the title of New Zealand's Champion Sire for the 2022-23 season and producing multiple Group 1 winners in the process.

PROISIR was bred by Tony Falcone and was born in 2009. He is the second foal from the Encosta De Lago mare PROPHET JEWEL and a son of the late Coolmore Stud-based CHOISIR. Proisir’s sire CHOISIR was a trailblazing international racehorse and a highly successful dual hemisphere sire. Choisir demonstrated he could consistently sire the ‘big horse’ worldwide with 95 stakes winners, including 11 Group 1 winners such as horses like STARSPANGLEDBANNER, OLYMPIC GLORY, OBVIOUSLY, SACRED CHOICE, JAPONISME, DIVINE PROPHET and THE LAST LION. Proisir’s full brother DIVINE PROPHET won the stallion making Gr.1 Caulfield Guineas.

PROISIR was sent into training with Gai Waterhouse, and although limited to a career of only seven starts, the colt had plenty of admirers. Unbeaten in his first three starts at Hawkesbury, Rosehill and Newcastle, his six-length win in the Gr.3 Spring Stakes at Newcastle came at his third start and led to jockey Nash Rawiller to say, “I think you've seen an unbelievable animal here today". Proisir started as hot favourite against DUNDEEL in the Gr.1 Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick. Proisir was the flashy front-runner, while Dundeel - known as IT'S A DUNDEEL in Australia - was the gritty tough Kiwi stayer and their 2012 clash was one of the highlights of the season. During the race, Proisir kicked clear in the straight under a bold ride, but It's A Dundeel's superior stamina kicked in as he ground back the margin to steal the victory. The two unbeaten colts created a great spectacle fighting out the finish, Proisir within a short neck of Dundeel at the winning post.

Gai Waterhouse would then throw Proisir in the deep end at start five, taking on established weight-for-age stars in the 2012 G1 WS Cox Plate. The eventual winner OCEAN PARK was a dominant weight-for-age horse; Proisir’s star stablemates PIERRO and MORE JOYOUS the multiple Group 1 winner ALL TOO HARD and GREEN MOON who would win the G1 Melbourne Cup at his next start, were all in the field - it was packed with quality from top to bottom. Nobody would have blamed the colt for shying at the task. Proisir finished eighth at Moonee Valley after the three-year-old shared the early pace before tiring in the straight.

PROISIR returned in the autumn with the world seemingly at his feet. He was third in the Gr.2 Hobartville Stakes behind PIERRO and REBEL DANE. Proisir and Dundeel met again in the autumn contesting the Gr.1 Randwick Guineas. Proisir running him to a half-length, and with Group 1 winning colts SACRED FALLS, FERLAX, and REBEL DANE chasing the pair three-plus lengths in behind. Tragedy would strike prior to the Doncaster and Proisir was subsequently sidelined by a tendon injury for the Autumn, and after a rehabilitation period he joined Peter and Paul Snowden's stable. He trialled brilliantly in late 2014, but a decision was made to retire him in 2015 after a recurrence of the injury.

PROISIR stands at the Rich Hill Stud in the Waikato, New Zealand. He started his career with a relatively low fee of NZ$7,000 and $9,000 in his initial years. However, from that debut crop emerged LEVANTE, BELLE PLAISIR, AIMEE’S JEWEL and RIODINI. Notably, DARK DESTROYER, bred from Proisir’s third crop, became a Group 1 winner in the G1 Tarzino Stakes, while YOUNCE from Proisir’s second crop was fourth in the Gr.1 Queen of the Turf Stakes.

However, the results from the fourth crop born in 2019 lit up the racecourse. PIER and LEGARTO provided Proisir with a clean sweep of the Group 1 of the Guineas in New Zealand when Pier became a Gr.1 NZ 2000 Guineas and Gr.2 Hawkesbury Guineas winner, while Legarto claimed the Gr.1 NZ 1000 Guineas and capped an excellent preparation with a victory in the Gr.1 Australian Guineas, in addition to other black-type wins and finished her career with victories in the Gr.1 Herbie Dyke and Bonecrusher Stakes. Other notable progeny in New Zealand includes three-time Group 1 winner WAITAK, who was a brilliant sprinter before becoming a middle-distance star.

TAPILDOODLEDO was a strong winner of the Gr.2 Tulloch Stakes during The Championships in Sydney. ARBY claimed the Gr.3 Manawatu Classic, then PROWESS, was hailed a star in her native land beating the older horses in the Gr.1 New Zealand Stakes and three other black-type events. She was sent to Sydney to contest the G1 Vinery Stud Stakes and in a performance that will be remembered - she gave the ‘Aussies’ a galloping lesson.

The service fee rose to $17,500 by the 2023 season as a result of a number of Group race successes by his progeny and a career high stud fee of $70,000. Godolphin Australia successfully bid $400,000 for the breeding right sold at the 2023 Inglis Chairman’s Sale. Proisir is a very well-conformed horse, he’s correct, and he has a lot of quality with the strength of Choisir, who was a brilliant stallion and the class of Encosta De Lago. There is a lot of genetic power in those two names. He also has a wonderful temperament, and his stock has inherited that great nature. Proisir's meteoric rise to the top of the stallion ranks has been driven by his ability to consistently upgrade his mares across a wide range of bloodlines.

In 2025 the Challenge Stakes at Hawkes Bay, which was previously called the Tarzino Trophy, became the Proisir Plate and has been run at Ellerslie in recent years as the first Group 1 of the New Zealand racing season. SEACHANGE KAWI, MELODY BELLE and CALLSIGN MAV are all back-to-back winners of the race, but it has been won by great New Zealand champions such as MUFHASA, ROUGH HABIT, OCEAN PARK and SUNLINE.
