PRINCE FOOTE

The Australia's champion 3YO Prince Foote was a star performer between 1909-1911

Prince Foote, an Australian Thoroughbred Stallion born in 1906, demonstrated exceptional athleticism during his racing career in Australia. Competing from the age of two to five, he achieved 11 notable victories across various distances, ranging from 7 furlongs to 3 miles. Notably, Prince Foote was trained by the esteemed Frank McGrath Senior, an inductee of the Australian Racing Hall of Fame, further solidifying his pedigree and accomplishments. The richly bred mare Petruschka was mated with Sir Foote in that spring of 1905 for the resultant foal was to be the little bay colt, Prince Foote. He would prove to be a legendary three-year-old.

Prince Foote raced between 1909 -1911 and equaled the record of champion Poseidon, winning the 1909 AJC Derby and VRC Derby, the 1909 Melbourne Cup, 1910 AJC St Leger and VRC St Leger in the same season. Prince Foote also won the Champion Stakes at Flemington, the Cumberland Stakes at Randwick and led all the way in the AJC Plate in a very fast time. In fact, his only defeat during that campaign came when Malt King beat him in the All-Aged Stakes at Flemington over the mile. Prince Foote began his four-year-old season in the same manner as the year before with a convincing victory in the Chelmsford Stakes carrying 9 st. 7lb, and it seemed that past glories would be repeated. Sent out at his next appearance in the Spring Stakes, the imported Comedy King was untroubled to cause a boilover in relegating him to second place.

Prince Foote's owner John Brown (1850-1930) was a coal baron, ship owner and racehorse breeder born near East Maitland, New South Wales and in 1897 begun to race horses under 'J.Baron.' His first success was in winning the 1897 AJC Doncaster Handicap with Superb. Sir Foote won the 1902 AJC Doncaster Handicap, VATC Futurity Stakes, VRC Newmarket Handicap and became his foundation sire, and the outstanding Duke Foote won the 1912 VRC Melbourne Stakes, 1912 & 1913 AJC Craven Plate and 1912 & 1913 Chelmsford Stakes, with Balloon King winning the 1930 VRC Derby.

Trainer Frank McGrath senior (1865-1947) had a career in racing of over 65 years winning 121 feature races and in the early 1900s trained Little Toy, 1906 Doncaster Handicap Abundance, 1902 AJC Derby and VRC Derby, also 1903 AJC St Leger and VRC St Leger, followed by the high class, legendary champions Amounis, Peter Pan, Beau Vite and the outstanding Irish import Denis Boy, 1931 VATC Caulfield Cup and 1932 AJC Metropolitan Handicap and 1932 VRC Cantala Stakes. On retirement, McGrath Senior handed his stable to his son Frank McGrath Jnr who had major success with Russia, 1947 AJC Colin Stephen Stakes, 1947 AJC Craven Plate and 1948 AJC Plate and On Line, 1959 Sydney Cup.

Prince Foote sired the classic winners Prince Viridis 1918 AJC and VRC St Leger, Richmond Main 1919 AJC Derby and VRC Derby and Prince Charles 1922 AJC Sydney Cup. All his best progeny were colts, including Richmond Main's younger brother Pelaw Main who won the AJC December Stakes and Prince Minimbah, the AJC Summer Cup winner. Prince Foote died in 1922, aged 16, of a ruptured blood vessel at his owners Wills Gully Stud.
