REDCLIFFE DOLPHINS - SEASON PREVIEW 2026

The Dolphins were recognised as the NRL's top attacking team in 2025 and are approaching the 2026 season with aspirations of participating in the finals for the first time. As they embark on their third year as the 17th team in the NRL, the Dolphins have come very close to securing a spot in the top eight in their previous two seasons. They certainly appear to possess all the necessary elements to advance further than they have previously.

However, the Dolphins are confronted with several significant selection headaches leading into 2026. A major injury ward over the past 12 months has contributed to this situation. Coupled with the addition of several key off-season recruits, such as Selwyn Cobbo from the Broncos and English forward Morgan Knowles from St Helens, it becomes clear where the imminent challenges lie.

A particularly interesting off-season acquisition is Selwyn Cobbo, who has transferred north from the Brisbane Broncos. While his performance decline at the Broncos clearly indicated the necessity of a fresh start, his overall potential remains undeniable. That is evident from his previous State of Origin performances, which followed consistent club performances.

While it is highly improbable that Cobbo will assume the fullback position at the Dolphins, his tenure with the Broncos demonstrated his proficiency as a winger or centre. Should Tabuai-Fidow not be deployed at fullback, he will occupy one centre position, with Herbie Farnworth securing the other. This places Cobbo in contention for a wing position, with only one likely vacancy given that goal-kicker Jamayne Isaako is slated to start.

The Dolphins' forward pack will be bolstered by the return of Thomas Gilbert and Max Plath, and potentially Thomas Flegler, who is anticipated to make his first appearance in nearly two years. These additions are crucial for the Dolphins, though they may result in some current players being excluded from the team.

It is highly probable that Plath will be selected as the primary lock and Gilbert will occupy the second-row position, with Flegler joining the front-row should he recover from his prolonged shoulder injury. This implies that only one of Daniel Saifiti or Francis Molo can be in the starting lineup, while prominent players such as English international Morgan Knowles, former Queensland representative Felise Kaufusi, and promising talent Kulikefu Finefeuiaki are all vying for a single starting position.

It is a problem many clubs would like to have - a wealth of talent with coach Kristen Woolf in a position to try out different combinations prior to Round 1 and work out what works best to kick off the year. The Dolphins are projected to finish just outside the top eight in our opinion; however, a robust start to the season could position them favourably to secure a qualifying spot before the finals.
